WaterNSW has revealed plans to significantly restructure its operations, resulting in a reduction of its workforce by 300 jobs, equating to 25% of its total staff. This decision follows the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s (IPART) action to limit a proposed increase in water prices, which would have ultimately impacted customers financially. A spokesperson for WaterNSW explained that the organisation faces an annual financial shortfall of $80 million and can no longer maintain its current operational framework without making cuts.

As part of this restructuring, which includes a 30% reduction in senior leadership positions, WaterNSW aims to streamline its services and focus on its primary responsibilities. The organisation intends to simplify processes and adjust priorities to ensure it meets legal and statutory obligations amid the transition. Employees affected by the job cuts will be offered voluntary redundancy, and WaterNSW has indicated that it has communicated this need for change to its staff over several months.

Despite the changes, the Australian Services Union (ASU) has voiced strong opposition, labelling the cuts as detrimental to both employees and the broader community. ASU NSW and ACT secretary Angus McFarland highlighted the critical role these workers play in maintaining a reliable water supply and managing infrastructure, particularly in light of increasing climate-related challenges such as floods.

While the initial plans could lead to reduced water prices for Sydney residents—increasing by only 10% over the next three years as opposed to the higher projected figures—there are concerns about the longevity of essential services and the overall impact of the significant job losses. As WaterNSW navigates this transition, the organisation claims it will work to lessen the effects on customers, although the measures taken might limit its capacity to operate as before.
