In a troubling series of incidents, an unidentified man has been accused of vandalising the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation on Toorak Road, South Yarra, with offensive graffiti on five occasions between March and July 2023. The incidents occurred on March 11, June 21, June 22, July 22, and July 30.
CCTV footage captured the suspect arriving on a black e-scooter. In two of the July incidents, he was spotted wearing a Scream mask that obscured his identity. The protest messages spray-painted on the heritage-listed synagogue included phrases such as “free Palestine” and “Iran is da bomb,” rendered in red and blue paint.
Police describe the suspect as a bald Caucasian male of medium build, and while his clothing varied across the incidents, he typically donned a long black jacket and a face covering. Law enforcement has released video footage in an effort to solicit public assistance in identifying the man.
Victoria Police condemned these acts, asserting that hate-driven behaviour has no place in the community. Premier Jacinta Allan echoed this sentiment, labelling the graffiti as a “disgraceful, senseless attack” and emphasising the importance of ensuring that overseas conflict and hatred do not manifest in Victoria. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward and contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
