On Saturday, protestors assembled in “Hostage Square” in Tel Aviv, expressing urgency and distress following the release of propaganda videos featuring malnourished Israeli hostages still detained in Gaza. The videos, shared by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, showcased hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski in deteriorating health.

One of the videos depicted David alongside distressing images of starving Palestinian children, emphasising the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. Currently, about fifty Israeli hostages are thought to be held captive, with at least twenty believed to be alive.

Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy to the Middle East, was present during the rally. His attendance followed a visit to a controversial US-supported humanitarian aid site in Gaza. Witkoff subsequently met with 40 representatives from the hostage families for nearly three hours, conveying deep emotions about the situation. During the meeting, he advocated for “all or nothing” ceasefire negotiations, where all fifty hostages would need to be returned simultaneously, as a condition for ending the conflict.

Witkoff remarked that if the remaining hostages do not return safely, someone would be held accountable. He further assured the families that the US would strive to secure their children’s release while holding Hamas responsible for their actions. His messages were accompanied by the families’ ongoing demands for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza and a full agreement to liberate the hostages.

On the day of the protest, tens of thousands demonstrated in Tel Aviv, urging the government to focus on the plight of their loved ones. With the release of disturbing footage and urgent reports about the harsh conditions faced by the captives, the families implored the Israeli government and US officials to take decisive action.

Rom Braslavski’s father expressed despair over his son’s condition as shown in the video, pleading with the Israeli Prime Minister to end the war and facilitate the return of all hostages. David’s brother condemned the treatment of the hostages as a “brutal assault” on humanity, calling for immediate action from both the Israeli government and US leadership.

In terms of the broader humanitarian situation, the Gaza Strip is facing escalating crises, with hospitals overflowing and a UN agency warning of impending famine. Reports indicate rising fatalities from malnutrition and continuing casualties as aid efforts are hampered. Amidst this turmoil, the Israeli Defence Forces have committed to relentless military action unless a hostage deal is negotiated.

As tensions rise and calls for action intensify, the future of the hostages and the ongoing conflict remain precarious, with urgent appeals for resolution from the families and the international community.
