The homicide squad in Perth’s southern suburbs is probing a puzzling case linked to the death of 53-year-old Elmars Kalejs, who succumbed to severe head injuries sustained months earlier. His family has voiced their anguish and desperation for clarity surrounding the incident.

On April 18, Kalejs was discovered injured beside his car at the Settlers Common Environmental Centre in Bedfordale around 12.30pm. Emergency responders rushed him to Royal Perth Hospital, where he battled his injuries, including bleeding on the brain, fractured ribs, and a collapsed lung, for over 60 days before passing away on June 24. CCTV footage captured snippets of his life leading up to the tragedy, yet the circumstances surrounding his injuries remain unclear.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jarrod Manson stated that Kalejs was not in a condition to recount the events leading to his injuries, which raises questions about whether they resulted from an assault or a vehicular incident. Efforts are underway to piece together the 24 hours leading up to his discovery. The police are actively seeking more information, including insights from witnesses, and have initiated distribution of flyers in food hampers to the homeless community in hopes of gathering leads.

Kalejs’ daughter, Courtney Mallard, expressed her family’s desire for answers, emphasising their need for closure. She has made a heartfelt appeal for anyone with information to come forward, assuring that forgiveness is extended to those involved.

As inquiries continue, a mobile police unit has been established at the old Armadale courthouse to assist in the investigation. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
