Japanese teenager Sorato Shimizu has made headlines by shattering the 100-metre sprint world record for athletes under 18. The 16-year-old achieved this remarkable feat during an inter-school competition in Hiroshima, clocking an impressive time of exactly 10 seconds. His performance eclipses the previous record of 10.06 seconds, which was jointly held by Thailand’s Puripol Boonson and America’s Christian Miller.

Following his race, Shimizu expressed his determination, stating, “I was determined to run under 10 seconds heading into the final. I’m happy to have set a high school record. I’d like to get a taste of it if I can make it.” This significant achievement also places him among the top five fastest Japanese sprinters in history. Notably, his record-setting time surpasses any sprint posted by legendary runner Usain Bolt before age 20.

Additionally, Shimizu’s achievement is particularly notable when compared to Australian star Gout Gout, who has a personal best of 10.17 seconds. While Gout has officially broken the 10-second barrier twice, those runs were aided by wind conditions that rendered them ineligible for record status.

Looking ahead, there is potential excitement as the two young sprinters may cross paths at the World Athletics Championships set to take place in Tokyo this September.
