Unexpected Justifications Drivers Use to Avoid Mobile Phone Fines

In New South Wales, a growing number of motorists are resorting to bizarre excuses in their efforts to escape fines for using their mobile phones while driving. Recent reports indicate that an eye-popping 75% of mobile phone-related court cases are being dismissed, with some defendants claiming their device was a Kit Kat, a banana, or even a calculator.

The state has implemented 50 fixed cameras and numerous mobile cameras designed to catch offenders, with statistics showing that one out of every 957 drivers is detected using their phone while behind the wheel. When these individuals contest their fines in court, they often find that the magistrate possesses high-resolution images that clearly show the make of the phone involved in the offence.

This surge in unusual courtroom defences has prompted Transport for NSW to issue stern warnings urging drivers to refrain from using their phones while driving. In NSW, individuals caught by mobile phone detection cameras face fines of $423 and the loss of five demerit points; this increases to $562 for offences committed in school zones. If caught during double demerits periods, further penalties apply.

The revenue generated from these fines is allocated to a fund intended for road safety initiatives, highlighting the serious implications of such infringements beyond just personal convictions. Authorities remain vigilant and continue to remind drivers of the importance of staying off their mobile devices to ensure road safety for everyone.
