John Strange is optimistic that Olivia Kernick from the Roosters will not face severe penalties from the match review committee after being reported for a hip drop tackle during a recent game. The incident occurred just before halftime, when Kernick came down on the legs of Bulldogs lock Holli Wheeler. Following the tackle, Wheeler immediately grasped her left ankle, sparking concern from league legend Ruan Sims, who initially thought it might have been an accident. However, video replays revealed it resembled a hip drop tackle. “That is pretty much a classic for a hip drop penalty,” Sims commented. He expressed hope that Wheeler would be alright, noting her importance to the team.
Kernick’s situation was not the sole worry for the Roosters’ coach, as there were also concerns about Jessica Sergis, who had a jaw issue after colliding with Bulldogs fullback Andie Robinson while pursuing a grubber kick. Robinson required medical attention for a cut on her face but was later cleared to resume play. Medics quickly assessed her head injury, while Sergis continued without significant impacts.
Amid these concerns, the Roosters demonstrated their prowess as defending premiers by racing to a dominant 32-point lead within just 35 minutes. The scoring spree began with Jasmin Strange, who touched down for a try early on. Shortly after, captain Isabelle Kelly added to the tally by weaving through the Bulldogs’ defence for another score, followed by tries from Macie Carlile, Corban Baxter, and Rima Butler before halftime.
Despite the overwhelming deficit, Canterbury’s general manager Phil Gould remained unshaken, emphasising the team’s fighting spirit. As the second half commenced, debutant Elizabeth MacGregor responded by scoring twice for the Bulldogs, although Tayla Preston managed to convert just one. As the match progressed, Monica Tagoai and Ash Quinlan contributed another twelve points to Canterbury’s score.
Ultimately, the Roosters closed the game with additional tries from Butler and Mia Wood, finalising a comprehensive victory of 42-22. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs showcased resilience, proving that they are not deterred by tough circumstances.
