Australians are being advised to steer clear of several areas in Thailand amid escalating conflict with Cambodia. As fighting along the Thai-Cambodian border persists, more regions have been designated as “reconsider travel” zones, prompting local evacuations. Armed skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian forces have intensified, leading to increasing concern over a prolonged dispute.

The Australian government’s Smartraveller has updated its warnings to travellers, particularly regarding eight districts within Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, where martial law is now in effect. Chanthaburi is noted for its durian production, while Trat sits about 315 kilometres from Bangkok. Previously, warnings extended to Buriram, Si Saket, Surin, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces close to the Cambodian border. Additionally, Australians are urged to reconsider travel to Cambodia’s border provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, which lie near the historic city of Siem Reap.

Reports indicate casualties, military strikes, and dangerous landmines in the affected regions, leading to closed border crossings. The United Nations Security Council convened urgently, with Malaysia calling for a cessation of hostilities and offering mediation support.

In recent clashes, over 58,000 people have sought refuge in Thailand, while more than 23,000 have fled Cambodia. The conflict has led to considerable loss of life, including civilians, and has intensified after a landmine explosion injured Thai soldiers. Both governments maintain that they have reacted with restraint amid accusations of war crimes from Thailand regarding civilian casualties.

Fighting has erupted near historically significant sites, including the Ta Muen Thom temple, as artillery exchanges were reportedly heard. The Thai military reported significant civilian casualties and severe injuries on both sides, with hospitals in the region suffering damage.

Families have been caught in the conflict, resulting in mass evacuations as villagers seek shelter in safer areas, such as gymnasiums and temples. Evacuees recount harrowing experiences amid the violence, expressing fears for their safety and a desire for a swift resolution.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister has indicated that both nations are considering ceasefire, but time is needed before implementation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also urged both countries to engage in dialogue to resolve their disputes, highlighting the historical significance of the current tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

In summary, the ongoing hostilities and resulting civilian evacuations highlight the urgency for peace and diplomatic resolutions in this long-standing territorial dispute, as the affected populations bear the brunt of the escalating violence on both sides of the border.
