Discontinuing Menopausal Hormone Therapy Associated with Higher Risk of Bone Fractures

A recent study has highlighted that women are at a heightened risk of experiencing fractures after discontinuing menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). Menopause, which typically affects Australian women around the age of 51, brings about the end of menstruation and often presents symptoms such as night sweats and mood swings. This natural hormonal shift can lead to increased risks of heart disease and osteoporosis.

According to Conjoint Professor John Eden from the University of New South Wales, it’s common for women to lose approximately 1% of their bone mass yearly, while some may even experience losses of 3% to 4%, potentially culminating in severe fractures, such as hip fractures. MHT is frequently prescribed to help mitigate these risks.

However, new research tracking patient data over 25 years suggests that women who cease MHT may face a significant increase in bone fracture risk for up to three years compared to those who have never undergone the therapy. This finding indicates that the risks associated with stopping MHT ought to be thoroughly considered.

Historically, a trend emerged where bone-strengthening medications were administered to women approaching menopause; however, these treatments have their own side effects. Eden argues that MHT may present a safer option for those affected.

Furthermore, experts assert that fears linking MHT to breast cancer have been overstated. Eden clarified that while MHT may cause a pre-existing breast cancer to become apparent sooner, it does not initiate breast cancer. Ultimately, these insights into MHT stress the importance of balanced decisions regarding its use and the potential health implications when stopping treatment.
