Alex de Minaur has playfully taken a jab at his competitors as he awaits news on whether he and his fiancée, Katie Boulter, will be granted a wildcard entry into the mixed doubles at the US Open. This year’s tournament sees many top-ranked singles players teaming up for the mixed doubles format, which promises to draw significant crowds. Notably, all but two players from the top ten in both men’s and women’s rankings are expected to participate, including world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz who will join forces with Emma Raducanu.

While Nick Kyrgios will be partnered with two-time US Open singles champion Naomi Osaka, de Minaur, currently ranked 13th globally, expressed disappointment at their absence from the selected list. He indicated that both he and Boulter had intended to compete. “We’d definitely be asking for a wildcard and hoping for one,” he stated. “Why not show a little love to a tennis couple? We’ve been going strong for five years and are set to marry next year, showcasing strong chemistry.”

De Minaur suggested that he and Boulter have a distinct advantage over other pairs, some of whom may lack rapport. “I think some of the other partnerships haven’t even spoken to each other before. At least we know each other well, and I believe that chemistry will help us perform well in the matches.”

He also referenced Jannik Sinner’s recent experience, who revealed he only met his doubles partner, Emma Navarro, for the first time just before Wimbledon, highlighting the lack of familiarity among some teams. Sinner noted, “We never talked. The choice was not big, but I’m very happy to play with Emma.”

As he awaits their wildcard decision, de Minaur remains focused on preparations for the US Open, commencing on August 24.
