A long-awaited convenience for commuters in Sydney’s Inner West is on the horizon, as the state government plans to reopen the Balmain West Ferry Wharf after a 12-year hiatus. Set to welcome passengers starting August 18, the newly refurbished wharf, located on Elliott Street, will enhance connectivity along the F3 Parramatta River route.
During peak times, the ferry will operate four services every hour, with departures scheduled for 5.50am, 6.50am, 7.50am, and 8.50am in the mornings, and 3.12pm, 4.12pm, 5.12pm, and 6.12pm in the afternoons. These services will provide crucial links to Barangaroo, Drummoyne, and Huntleys Point.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne noted the increase in housing around the area since the wharf’s closure in 2013, suggesting a ready customer base for the ferry service. The return of these ferry services is anticipated to alleviate stress on local roads, offering residents an alternative mode of transportation. Transport Minister John Graham emphasised the need for multiple transport options to facilitate movement in and out of the city, benefitting those who rely on buses, roads, and trains.
The reopening is also expected to diminish overcrowding at the Balmain East Wharf, especially during busy events like New Year’s Eve, where large crowds have raised safety concerns. Minor upgrades are planned for Balmain West Wharf in preparation for its reopening, including the installation of Opal card readers, CCTV for security, and new signage, alongside improvements made by the local council, which is also planning to establish a café at the site.
Moreover, Transport for NSW is exploring the feasibility of introducing a new weekend ferry route aimed at connecting inner harbour suburbs with the city, as well as a service running between Barangaroo and the new Sydney Fish Market, potentially expanding commuter options further.
In summary, the revival of Balmain West Ferry Wharf represents a significant development in public transport for Sydney’s Inner West, providing residents with a much-needed alternative to road travel while also aiming to enhance overall transportation efficiency in the area.
