Greg Josephson, a 58-year-old co-founder of the popular youth clothing chain Universal Store, tragically passed away on June 26 after allegedly being murdered by a 15-year-old acquaintance during a school holiday celebration at a property in Clayfield. His death has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Josephson was also an entrepreneur with business ventures that included several cafes on the Sunshine Coast. Following his untimely passing, the management of one of his establishments, Cafe Doonan, announced the closure of Cafe Noosa, Noosa General Store, and Eumundi Sourdough Co. This decision, described as heartbreaking, reflects the family’s struggles in coming to terms with their loss. Cafe Doonan expressed their commitment to honouring Josephson’s vision and his substantial contributions to the community.
Josephson was discovered deceased at around 8:15 pm on the night of his death, with a 15-year-old boy arrested nearby and charged with murder. This individual, who had called emergency services, was known to Josephson and remains in custody as the case progresses through the legal system.
In a heartfelt tribute, Cafe Doonan praised Josephson for his dedication to building a hub of businesses and his unwavering passion. The staff expressed their sorrow at losing a kind and gentle leader, while Universal Store released a statement extending their condolences to Josephson’s family, recognising his significant role in the company’s growth until 2018 when it was sold to private equity.
Josephson co-founded Universal Store with his brother in 1999, serving as a director until the company transitioned to private ownership before listing on the ASX in 2020. After the sale, he continued his entrepreneurial journey as the CEO of Josephson Holdings Pty Ltd.
His unexpected death marks a significant loss to both his family and the wider community, where his contributions and legacy will be sorely missed.
