MELBOURNE: The Wallabies are gearing up for a crucial second Test against the British and Irish Lions at the MCG, with hopes that influential forwards Rob Valetini and Will Skelton, alongside possibly Langi Gleeson, will bolster their performance. With the series at stake after a loss in the opener, rugby legend Michael Hooper advocates for sweeping changes to keep their hopes alive.

Reflecting on his experiences from 2013 when the Wallabies levelled the series after an initial defeat, Hooper, now an analyst for Stan Sport, suggests sticking with Jake Gordon as the starting halfback instead of pairing young No. 10 Tom Lynagh with Tate McDermott, who impressed off the bench in Brisbane. Hooper believes McDermott’s skills are best utilised when unleashed in the second half.

Looking to shake up the backline, Hooper recommends moving Hunter Paisami to No. 12, which would necessitate dropping Harry Potter from the starting lineup. He praised Paisami’s standout performance against the Lions in the past. By restructuring the backline, moving Len Ikitau to 13, and placing Joseph Suaalii on the wing, Hooper envisions creating more opportunities for scoring.

Hooper is also keen on integrating Lukhan Salakaia-Loto into the starting lineup, possibly as a No. 6 or second-row player, reinforcing their strength in key positions. He hinted at the potential impact of returning players, suggesting that their presence could significantly enhance the Wallabies’ game.

On a lighter note, Hooper jokingly suggested that coach Joe Schmidt consider including Pete Samu, who was curiously barred from playing in a recent match by the Lions.

In comments regarding the Lions’ tactics, veteran James Slipper highlighted their tendency to operate on the edge of the rules, noting that a more astute approach would be necessary for the Wallabies to counter this strategy. Test great Matt Burke echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of playing within the referee’s boundaries to avoid penalties.

As the anticipation builds for the announcement of the Wallabies’ lineup on Thursday, fans and analysts alike await the strategies that will unfold in this pivotal clash against the Lions.
