Cameron Smith has shared details about his conversation with Peter V’landys, the chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission, regarding the appointment of Kevin Walters as the new Kangaroos coach. Although Smith was initially considered for the role, he revealed that he had never been formally approached or interviewed for the position.

In a recent appearance on Nine’s show 100% Footy, Smith recounted receiving a call from V’landys, who informed him of the decision to appoint Walters. Smith expressed his respect for this decision, stating, “I’m happy with that decision, I respect that decision.”

Though Walters’ appointment has yet to be officially announced, discussions are now shifting to his potential coaching staff. Smith mentioned that while he had not pursued the head coach role formally, he would have put his case forward had he received an opportunity. He acknowledged the hierarchy’s choice of Walters as an excellent appointment.

Former Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga previously worked alongside assistants Justin Holbrook and Brett White. V’landys reportedly hinted at the possibility of Smith taking on an assistant coaching role, but Smith confirmed he has not had any further talks with the NRL officials regarding this prospect.

In summary, Cameron Smith’s insights shed light on the coaching transition within the Kangaroos, highlighting both his respect for the decision-makers and the potential for future involvement in the coaching set-up.
