Jake Fraser-McGurk has been unexpectedly recalled to the Australian T20 squad for the first match against the West Indies after a series of injuries to other players. Initially omitted from the team, he was selected as a replacement for fast bowler Spencer Johnson, who was ruled out due to back soreness sustained during the IPL. Shortly after, Matt Short was sent home with a minor side strain following a training session in Jamaica. As a result, Fraser-McGurk will open the batting alongside captain Mitch Marsh.
Fraser-McGurk first gained attention when he scored a world record century off just 29 balls in a domestic one-day cup match, coincidentally against the West Indies, prior to receiving his international call-up. However, his transition to international cricket has been underwhelming, managing only 113 runs across seven T20 matches, with inconsistent performances noted during his time in the Major League Cricket (MLC) for San Francisco.
Selectors are being cautious with Short, who is expected to return for the T20 series against South Africa, set to commence in Darwin on August 10. Tim David is another notable absentee, as he is resting due to a hamstring injury.
In his debut, Mitch Owen, who made headlines last summer with a century in the BBL final for the Hurricanes, will bat at number seven. The tight schedule of the five-match series, spread over just nine days, is seen by Marsh as an opportunity for fringe players to showcase their abilities at an international level.
Marsh emphasised the importance of representing Australia and winning the series while also encouraging a team culture of unity and flexibility. He is keen for the new squad members to bond and work collaboratively without feeling pressured to prove themselves, highlighting the strength of the overall squad despite missing key players like Travis Head, Alex Carey, and frontline bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.
The opening match is set to take place at 10 am AEST on Monday, with the confirmed Australia XI comprising Mitch Marsh (captain), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Josh Inglis (wicketkeeper), Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, and Adam Zampa.
