Tim Tszyu faced a significant setback in his boxing career after being defeated by Sebastian Fundora for the WBC Super Welterweight Title via TKO. As the seventh round ended, Tszyu’s corner opted not to continue the bout, leading to the fight’s premature conclusion. In a post-fight reflection, Tszyu acknowledged Fundora’s prowess, stating, “He’s one tough opponent. I gave it my all, but I couldn’t secure the victory. The title belongs to Sebastian, the best in the 154-pound category right now.”
The match began intensely, with Tszyu being knocked down in the first round and sustaining a cut near his eye shortly after. Despite this, Fundora also faced adversity, experiencing a nosebleed in the fourth round and further injury in the sixth. However, Fundora’s remarkable reach advantage proved pivotal, allowing him to land significantly more punches throughout the fight. Tszyu maintained that the cut did not contribute to the bout’s outcome, admitting, “He was simply the better fighter. His height made it feel at times like I was fighting against nothing.”
Fundora, highlighting his game plan, mentioned that he had focused on leveraging his height during the fight. He expressed a sense of realisation upon recognising his reach on the morning of the match, which he had honed throughout his professional career.
Following the fight, while Tszyu was initially stable in his dressing room, he was later taken to the hospital for further evaluation after the challenging defeat.
