Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is set to take on social media celebrity-turned-boxer Jake Paul in May, ahead of his highly anticipated championship match against Terence Crawford scheduled for September 14 in Las Vegas. The fight with Crawford is being organised by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.

News of Alvarez’s matchup with Paul has gained traction, with respected boxing journalist Julius Julianis confirming that an agreement is already in place for this unexpected event during the Cinco de Mayo weekend. The bout will be co-promoted by Canelo Promotions, MVP, and PBC.

Alvarez, who has previously dismissed Paul’s challenges, may reconsider due to the financial incentives generated from Paul’s recent bouts, including a remarkable $29 million event against Mike Tyson.

While there were speculations about Alvarez facing IBF champion William Scull or contender Christian Mbilli, neither fight could generate the same level of attention as a clash with Paul, despite being more competitive.

The upcoming fight against Crawford marks a significant moment in Alvarez’s career as he moves up to the 168-pound limit, without any catchweight or rehydration clauses. With a record of five wins since his 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez remains a formidable force in the ring. However, until an official announcement is made, all developments should be treated with caution.
