A heroic Jack Russell named Vivienne has been credited with saving the lives of her elderly owners, Helen and Geoff Packer, during a fire that engulfed their home in Unley Park around 3 am. The couple, who are the grandparents of Maisie Packer—the wife of Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee—were asleep when the blaze began, which originated in their carport and quickly spread to the roof. Unfortunately, their fire alarms failed to go off, but Vivienne’s timely barking alerted them to the danger, allowing them to escape unharmed.
According to the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS), the fire caused severe damage to the Packer’s residence, with estimated repair costs reaching approximately $2 million. MFS representative Gideon Douglas commented on the situation, saying it was a tough day for the Packers as they had lost a significant part of their home. However, he praised Vivienne for her crucial role in ensuring their safety, stating the dog deserved some special treats for her actions.
Neighbour Scott Fox attempted to contain the flames with a garden hose prior to the arrival of firefighters, but the fire quickly intensified. The Packers have lived in their house for over 30 years and are insured; however, they face uncertainty about rebuilding, given their advanced age.
This incident highlights not only the unconditional loyalty and instinct of dogs but also the importance of ensuring that fire alarms are functioning and properly located in homes to prevent tragedies. Fortunately, the Packers are safe, thanks to their brave little companion.
