Victoria is currently facing a rise in aggravated burglaries, raising concerns among authorities and community members regarding home security. Recent crime statistics reveal that many burglars are capitalising on easily overlooked weaknesses, such as unsecured doors.

Nicoll Peschek from Neighbourhood Watch Victoria emphasised the importance of securing all external entrances, including less obvious ones like balcony doors. Alarmingly, up to 80% of break-ins occur through unlocked doors and windows, with thieves often abandoning their attempts if homes are adequately secured.

The use of ‘doggy doors’ has become a notable security concern, according to Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Andy McKee, who suggested that these access points should be reconsidered, especially if they are not in regular use.

To enhance security, the implementation of technology such as CCTV and alarm systems can be beneficial. Peschek highlighted the significance of dependable locks, stating that while modern technology is valuable, the basics must not be ignored.

Another crucial strategy is to keep valuables and keys out of sight. Peschek advised residents to store their keys securely, away from entry points, preferably in drawers. It’s also beneficial to give the impression that someone is home, along with being cautious about online security practices.

McKee noted the importance of safeguarding belongings inside vehicles, suggesting simple precautions like ensuring valuables are not visible and using key fob protections.

As community members work together to reduce their risk of home invasions, adopting these practical measures can significantly enhance safety and deter potential thieves.
