A man is scheduled to appear in court today following accusations of threatening a federal politician prior to this year’s election. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) initiated an investigation in March after discovering threats made against the unnamed MP on social media.
Authorities traced the threats to a resident of Kingswood, located in Sydney’s western suburbs. A search warrant was executed at his home on May 7, during which several electronic devices were confiscated. The individual has since been charged with one count of threatening to cause harm to a public official and has received a court attendance notice.
Acting Commander Mark Baron highlighted the AFP’s commitment to supporting free speech and political expression. However, he emphasised that the organisation would not condone any form of criminal conduct, including threats or harassment.
The accused man will appear at the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney today, facing potential penalties of up to nine years imprisonment if found guilty of the charges.
