A driver in south-west Sydney has faced penalties after attempting to transport a full-sized mattress unsecured in the back of his ute. The incident occurred over the weekend when police officers in Liverpool stopped a Kia Tasman after noticing the mattress protruding from the vehicle without any form of restraint.
When questioned by the authorities, the driver insisted there was “nothing wrong” with the situation, a claim that law enforcement refuted. The NSW Police elaborated that all items transported in vehicles must be properly secured to avoid falling off, shifting dangerously, or compromising the stability of the vehicle.
In addition to the unsecured mattress, officers pointed out that it obscured the vehicle’s number plate, which is also a violation. The police reminded motorists that number plates need to be clearly visible from at least 20 metres away and within an angle of 45 degrees from any directional view above or to the side of the vehicle.
For driving with an oversized load, the driver has been hit with a fine of $481 and will incur three demerit points on his record. This incident serves as a caution to all drivers about the importance of adhering to transport regulations for the safety of all road users.
