A farmer from Crystal Brook in South Australia, Chris Thomas, is confronting a distressing situation that may force him to spend his remaining days away from home due to inadequate care at his regional hospital. Chris, who relies on a wheelchair and has deteriorating health, had been receiving essential dialysis treatment thrice weekly in Port Pirie. However, his daughter, Alex, reveals that this option is no longer available.

Alex stated that her father has been advised to either discontinue dialysis treatment or relocate to Adelaide for better medical care. She expressed her frustration, insisting that one’s postcode should not determine the quality of healthcare available to them. Following a cardiac arrest in May, Chris was moved to Lyell McEwin Hospital, but Alex claims that Port Pirie’s dialysis unit lacks the necessary facilities to cater to his complex medical needs. Reports suggest that the unit is constrained by limited space, insufficient equipment, and an inadequate number of staff.

The South Australian government acknowledges the existence of a dialysis unit in Port Pirie but admits it is not sufficiently equipped to manage Chris’s complicated health situation. In response to this pressing issue, a review of his case has commenced.

Health Minister Chris Picton assured that efforts would continue to improve healthcare access for patients in regional areas, while also emphasising that medical decisions are ultimately driven by doctors’ recommendations. The opposition has been vocal about this predicament, urging the government to invest in additional renal dialysis chairs within the state. Meanwhile, SA Health has refuted claims suggesting that Chris was coerced into either relocating or ending his treatment.

This situation underscores the serious shortcomings in healthcare accessibility for rural communities and highlights the need for immediate action to ensure that all Australians receive the standard of care they deserve, irrespective of their geographical location.
