Qantas has announced that a suspected cybercriminal has initiated contact just days after a significant data breach was reported. At least six million customers had their personal information compromised following a targeted attack on a call centre, which resulted in unauthorised access to a third-party platform.

In a statement released today, Qantas confirmed the contact from the suspected perpetrator and stated that they are working to verify the legitimacy of this communication. Due to the seriousness of the situation, the airline has involved the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and has refrained from providing further details about the correspondence.

A Qantas representative assured that there is no evidence to suggest that any personal data stolen during the breach has been made public. The airline is collaborating with cyber security experts to monitor the situation closely.

According to the AFP, an investigation is underway, and they noted that Qantas has been proactive in assisting authorities throughout this process. Further updates will be provided as developments occur.

The data breach impacted various types of customer information, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, and frequent flyer numbers. However, Qantas clarified that sensitive details such as credit card information, personal financial data, and passwords were not part of the affected database and remain secure.

For customers who may have been impacted by this breach, Qantas has set up a dedicated support line offering specialist identity protection advice and resources. Affected individuals can reach out at 1800 971 541 or +612 8028 0534 for assistance.
