Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has pledged her government’s full support for the Jewish community following an alleged arson attack on the Albert Street synagogue in East Melbourne on Friday night. Early on Saturday, Allan visited the damaged synagogue, engaging with local Jewish leaders to discuss the incident’s impact.

Speaking to the media after her visit, Allan condemned the rise of antisemitism, stating, “We must put a stop to hate, put a stop to antisemitism. It has no place anywhere.” She assured that government assistance would encompass mental health services for those affected, alongside additional support required by the community.

In her discussions, Allan proposed establishing an “anti-hate task force” in collaboration with police and community representatives, aiming to address such incidents effectively. She affirmed her commitment to standing by the Jewish community in Victoria, emphasising her ongoing support.

The alleged arson incident has led to the arrest of a 34-year-old man, Angelo Loras, who was charged on Saturday night and will remain in custody pending further court proceedings.

Allan concluded her visit without taking questions, but her statements reflect a strong governmental stance against hate crimes and a commitment to community solidarity.
