The Sydney Swans managed to keep their season alive with a close 11-point victory over the Fremantle Dockers. However, this win has come at a cost, as two key players have been added to the injury list. Joel Amartey and Tom Papley both exited the match due to injuries, with Amartey suffering a groin issue and Papley experiencing hamstring problems.

Papley’s injury occurred when he made a chip kick intended for Amartey, after which he was seen limping noticeably. He was substituted at halftime, with Matt Roberts stepping in to replace him. This was particularly concerning for the Swans as Papley had only just returned from a significant injury, having been sidelined from round two to round 15 due to a fractured foot.

The woes didn’t stop with Papley; Amartey also left the field limping in the final moments of the match, later diagnosed with a groin concern. Following the game, coach John Cox remained hopeful, insisting that the team must focus on the present while assessing the situation regarding their injured players. He expressed the need for their best talent to be on the field, stating that having both Papley and Amartey back in good form is crucial for the team’s success.

Cox acknowledged the importance of consistency with the best players, emphasising the necessity for the team to gel as they aim for a finals appearance, which is still mathematically possible. “We’ve always thought if we can get our best team on the park and playing consistently together, it allows us to play the way we want to play,” he remarked. He concluded by stressing the team’s immediate focus, stating that they would take each day as it comes, especially with assessments on the injured players scheduled for Monday.
