Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made a notable public appearance following a period of heavy security during the ongoing conflict with Israel. Khamenei attended an Ashura ceremony on July 6, 2025, in Tehran, his first public engagement since the war began. State television captured his arrival at a mosque, where he waved to the crowd, which responded enthusiastically.

Throughout the war, Khamenei remained in a secure location due to escalated threats against his life, particularly after the US targeted Iranian nuclear sites. Notably, US President Donald Trump made statements implying awareness of Khamenei’s whereabouts while assuring him that there were no immediate plans to eliminate him.

As the conflict subsided into a temporary ceasefire, Khamenei delivered a recorded message claiming that Iran had struck back against the US and warning of further repercussions for any additional attacks. The Iranian regime has reported over 900 casualties and considerable damage to its nuclear infrastructure, prompting a suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to hinder inspection capabilities.

The war was sparked by suspicions that Iran aimed to pursue nuclear weapons, prompting intense Israeli military action. Iran retaliated with missile strikes on Israeli targets, resulting in numerous casualties. Despite the escalation, uncertainty surrounds the state of Iran’s nuclear facilities and whether any enriched uranium was safeguarded prior to the US attacks.

The Ashura ceremony commemorated the martyrdom of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, a significant event in Shia Islam that reinforces cultural and religious identities among the Shia community, representing approximately 10% of the global Muslim population. During the ceremony, mourners engaged in passionate displays of grief, underlining the importance of this occasion in Iran, which is predominantly Shia.

Amid ongoing tensions, the Iranian internet faced significant disruptions, attributed to government actions following recent conflicts, raising concerns about access to information within the country.
