In the wake of the St George Illawarra Dragons’ narrow 28-24 defeat against the Canberra Raiders, forward Jaydn Su’A awaits the judiciary’s decision regarding a hip-drop tackle on Joseph Tapine. Tapine exited the match in the 25th minute following the tackle, which drew scrutiny due to its unorthodox nature, as Tapine was caught between Su’A’s legs rather than being subjected to the usual weight-drop associated with such tackles.
Raiders’ coach Kevin Walters expressed his belief that the tackle lacked significant malice, stating on Fox League that “there’s not a lot to it.” During the match, referee Gerard Sutton also noted that while there appeared to be limited intent, it still qualified as dangerous contact.
The match began with a contentious moment when Tyrell Sloan’s potential try was dismissed due to a forward pass by Moses Suli, a decision that elicited strong opinions from commentators. The Raiders managed to strike first, with Xavier Savage scoring a try in the corner at GIO Stadium. The Dragons quickly retaliated, and Sloan eventually scored, capitalising on a well-executed backline play.
A memorable highlight came from Kaeo Weekes, who scored an impressive try by sprinting 90 metres after recovering a loose ball, delighting the crowd with a bow for the “Try July” initiative. However, Weekes faced scrutiny as well, being reported for a crusher tackle on Blake Lawrie.
As the second half unfolded, Weekes appeared poised for a standout performance, scoring again, while teammate Morgan Smithies also marked his first try, pushing the score to 24-6. Nevertheless, the Dragons found their rhythm, with Su’A scoring to narrow the gap. Not to be outdone, Weekes completed his hat-trick shortly after.
Sloan made the contest thrilling with his second try, leaving the Dragons trailing by just four points after Kyle Flanagan crossed the line. However, as the pressure mounted, the Dragons were unable to clinch the win, compounded by David Klemmer receiving a sin-bin for a high tackle before the match concluded.
