In a remarkable NRLW debut, Indie Bostock, a 18-year-old winger for the St George Illawarra Dragons, scored an incredible try just moments after receiving her first touch of the ball during a match against the Canberra Raiders. Bostock, demonstrating impressive agility and strength, spun out of a tackle within her own 20-metre zone, burst through a gap, fended off the fullback, and sprinted 80 metres to score. This spectacular play set the tone for the Dragons, who dominated the game, closing it out with a 36-14 victory on a chilly Canberra afternoon.
Commentators were impressed by Bostock’s talent, with Phil Gould praising her as “a wonderful athlete” and Ruan Sims noting that she would be “dining out on that try for a while to come.” Bostock would ultimately score twice during her debut match, showcasing her potential in the league.
The match also featured a nostalgic moment when Dragons captain Zali Hopkins mimicked the iconic try celebration of former NRL player Mark “Piggy” Riddell. During the 2002 season, Riddell famously celebrated by jumping over the fence to applaud himself after scoring, and Hopkins echoed this celebration by climbing the fence and applauding her own try.
The Dragons maintained a slim lead for much of the match, with only a try separating them from the Raiders until the final minutes. However, they surged ahead with three unanswered tries, all converted, sealing their emphatic victory.
Teagan Berry shone on the field, making significant contributions with 247 run metres, four line breaks, 11 broken tackles, and a try assist, alongside her own try. Following this impressive performance, the Raiders will prepare to face the Sharks next week, while the Dragons will take on the Roosters in Kogarah on the same day.
