Reagan Ainslie Chown, aged 25, has been sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison following a manslaughter conviction tied to the death of Constable Anthony Woods. The incident occurred during a police chase in Perth on June 8, 2023, when Chown, along with two accomplices, attempted to evade capture in a stolen vehicle. Following the chase, they stopped in a cul-de-sac, where Woods tried to detain Chown, who was driving.

In a reckless attempt to escape, Chown reversed the car at speed while Woods was positioned near the vehicle. Tragically, Woods was struck and dragged under the vehicle, subsequently succumbing to cardiac arrest caused by mechanical compression of his chest on June 12, 2023. The officer, only 28, had dedicated himself to community service, and his mother, Natalie Woods, shared a heartfelt victim impact statement in court, highlighting the profound loss and ongoing pain her family experiences with every significant date that reminds them of Anthony.

During the trial, Chown’s defence claimed that he was not responsible because Woods had deployed a Taser, allegedly resulting in his loss of control over the stolen vehicle. However, Justice Joseph McGrath dismissed this argument, stating that Chown had premeditated his actions and consciously chose to ignore the police officer’s commands to remain stationary.

Chown faced a range of charges, initially accused of murder, but the charge was later reduced to manslaughter just before the trial commenced. He was also found guilty of stealing the vehicle and engaging in reckless driving while attempting to evade police. Ultimately, he was given a minimum term of 13 years and six months of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

The court heard that Chown was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident. The loss of Constable Woods has left a deep impact on his loved ones, with his mother reflecting on his passion for family and community service. Chown’s sentencing serves as a reminder that such tragic outcomes stem from choices made in moments of desperation and recklessness.
