In a landmark selection meeting, Queensland selector Darren Lockyer disclosed that the team line-up for the upcoming State of Origin decider featured unexpected choices. This session, conducted late on Sunday between Lockyer, head coach Billy Slater, and fellow selector Gene Miles lasted longer than any before, focusing on finalising a competitive starting 17 for the critical match in Sydney.
The selected team surprised many, particularly with the inclusion of Gehamat Shibasaki in the backline and Josh Papali’i, who had previously stepped away from representative football, returning to play at prop. Lockyer noted that both Reece Walsh and Murray Taulagi were serious contenders, but injuries ultimately ruled them out. Walsh’s absence, especially after Kalyn Ponga’s injury, raised eyebrows, given his anticipated role as fullback.
Lockyer detailed the selection process, indicating it was driven by the need to assess players’ fitness and opinions were exchanged thoroughly during their lengthy discussions. He specifically noted concerns regarding Taulagi’s physical condition. “We were looking at different scenarios,” he explained, reflecting on the protracted deliberations that led to the final line-up.
The decision to shift Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to the fullback position while bringing Shibasaki into centre proved controversial. Lockyer acknowledged the quality that Walsh brings but emphasised that he is still developing his game and recovering from a PCL injury, which impacts his performance. Despite Walsh’s talent, Tabuai-Fidow’s recent form has been impressive, incentivising selectors to position him where he can make the most impact.
Lockyer highlighted the importance of getting Tabuai-Fidow involved, ideally positioning him to maximise his contributions in attack. He underscored that creating play momentum is crucial for the team, suggesting that if conditions are favorable, it will harness their offensive capabilities.
As Queensland prepares for the decisive match against New South Wales, the teams will meet at Accor Stadium in Sydney, with the series currently tied at 1-1. The match is set to be a thrilling conclusion as both sides vie for the prestigious shield.
