The Sea World Foundation has announced a significant development on the Gold Coast with the introduction of a $10 million marine animal hospital aimed at improving care for marine wildlife. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with specialized tools to treat larger marine mammals, including dolphins, marking a notable advancement in veterinary capabilities.
Claire Madden, the leading veterinarian at Sea World, emphasized that this new facility will enhance their capacity to assist marine wildlife, which has seen an increasing need for intervention. The hospital will not only bolster marine conservation efforts but also elevate the quality of care provided to these animals.
One standout feature of the hospital is its purpose-built surgical theatre designed specifically for marine wildlife procedures. The hospital will also incorporate advanced imaging technology, expanding its diagnostic capabilities beyond what is currently available.
In a bid to foster a deeper connection between the public and wildlife, the hospital’s design includes viewing areas for visitors to witness the vital work being done. Madden highlighted that this initiative aligns with their core conservation values, aiming to engage the community and instill a greater appreciation for marine life.
Environment and Tourism Minister Andrew Powell praised the project, expressing confidence that it would not only be visually impressive but also immensely beneficial for both wildlife and the local community. The facility is set to commence operations by the end of next year, promising to be a major asset for marine conservation on the Gold Coast.
