Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has shared his insights with Queensland selectors regarding the fullback role following Kalyn Ponga’s recent injury. Ponga has been sidelined from Origin III due to a Lisfranc injury sustained during a match against the Raiders. As a result, Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow have emerged as potential replacements for Ponga.
Tabuai-Fidow, who previously played centre in Origin I and wing in Origin II, showcased his scoring talent by netting four tries against the Rabbitohs. Despite this impressive performance, Bennett has expressed reservations about Tabuai-Fidow taking up the fullback position. He believes that Tabuai-Fidow’s versatility is too valuable, suggesting that his skills are better employed in centre or wing positions.
Bennett remarked, “Probably not,” when asked if Tabuai-Fidow should be moved to fullback, emphasising that other areas need greater attention in terms of filling positions. Walsh, who also performed well against the Warriors, has entered the discussion for the fullback role, although there are concerns regarding his knee injury. Broncos coach Michael Maguire stated that Walsh is “ready” to play.
Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf has voiced his support for Tabuai-Fidow, stating that he would excel as a fullback if given the chance. Woolf highlighted Tabuai-Fidow’s capability, mentioning that he can effectively contribute when playing in various positions, including fullback, centre, and wing. Woolf noted the significance of representing Queensland for Tabuai-Fidow, expressing confidence that he would not disappoint if called upon.
As the team deliberates on their options, both Walsh and Tabuai-Fidow have demonstrated their abilities, making the decision a challenging one for selectors. With Origin III approaching, the commentary from Bennett and Woolf will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s final composition.
