As of July 13, e-scooters will be legal for use on public roads and footpaths in South Australia, as the state government implements regulations to promote safe riding. This initiative aims to alleviate urban congestion and enhance transport options within the city.

The new rules dictate that riders must be a minimum of 16 years old. Speed limits are set at 25 km/h in designated bike lanes, 60 km/h on roads, and 10 km/h on footpaths. To ensure rider safety, mobile phone use while operating an e-scooter is prohibited, along with riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Additionally, wearing a helmet is mandatory, and riders must use lights during low-light conditions, particularly at night.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis has emphasised that the government is taking reckless behaviour seriously, introducing substantial penalties for speeding on footpaths and roads. These safety measures come in response to concerns regarding irresponsible riding, including manoeuvring through traffic without due care.

Government officials expect that with wider adoption of e-scooters, traffic congestion in Adelaide can be reduced significantly, potentially decreasing the volume of cars on the roads. This legislation could also benefit students, as it provides a lawful means for them to travel short distances to schools using e-scooters.

While private e-scooters are not allowed until the legalisation date, the government plans to evaluate these new regulations within a year to ensure they effectively address safety concerns. To prepare the public for the forthcoming changes, an educational campaign will be launched next month, aimed at informing South Australians about the new e-scooter laws and promoting responsible use.

In summary, this new legislation marks a significant step towards integrating e-scooters into South Australia’s transport framework, highlighting the government’s commitment to modernising mobility while prioritising community safety.
