Manly Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold has dismissed speculation that he suggested Daly Cherry-Evans relinquish his captaincy. The team has faced performance issues following Cherry-Evans’ announcement to leave at the season’s conclusion for another club, yet he has received significant criticism, particularly from Fox League pundits.

During a recent press conference, Seibold was confronted with claims that he had spoken to Cherry-Evans about stepping down as captain for the remainder of the season. “No, never, not once,” Seibold firmly stated. He emphasised his decision-making process, comparing Cherry-Evans’ situation to that of Adam Reynolds at South Sydney, where Reynolds continued leading successfully even after announcing he would leave the club.

Seibold reiterated his confidence in Cherry-Evans, saying, “Chez is our leader. I’ve publicly stated that many times.” He expressed uncertainty about the origin of the claims that Cherry-Evans should stand down, labelling them as unfounded.

Interestingly, the coach shared insights into a weekly team tradition he calls “campfire sessions,” where players take turns speaking to the group. Cherry-Evans took his turn this week, discussing his decision to leave the club where he won a premiership in 2011, which Seibold noted was well articulated.

Seibold defended Cherry-Evans against ongoing criticisms from the media, citing the veteran’s proactive approach in informing the club early about his departure, allowing them to seek a replacement in Jamal Fogarty. He expressed that there is nothing suspicious or negative in Cherry-Evans’ decision, highlighting the solid relationship he shares with his captain.

When pressed by a journalist about his continued support for Cherry-Evans, Seibold stated, “Because he’s our leader, he’s our captain.” He praised Cherry-Evans’ foresight in notifying the club and stated a strong commitment to supporting all players, reinforcing that he views Cherry-Evans as an integral part of the team’s fabric.

As the Sea Eagles prepare to face the Tigers at Brookvale later this evening, Seibold remains resolute in backing his captain amidst the swirling commentary and speculation surrounding their performance and Cherry-Evans’ impending departure.
