Former NSW Blues captain James Tedesco has shared his newfound sense of ease regarding State of Origin selection after enduring a difficult year. Following 22 consecutive appearances for the Blues as fullback, Tedesco was dropped in favour of Dylan Edwards for the 2024 series. An injury to Edwards allowed Tedesco a brief return for the series opener in Sydney, but he was sidelined again for the subsequent matches, which the Blues ultimately won to secure the shield.
Reflecting on the shift from playing to watching, Tedesco admitted that witnessing last year’s comeback was challenging for him, given his long-standing commitment to the team since 2016. However, his perspective has changed for the 2025 series, as he felt relaxed and prepared for whatever the team’s decisions might be. He appreciated Edwards’ performance and accepted that he would likely not be a part of the lineup this year, acknowledging that his focus had shifted.
Instead of lamenting his absence from the field, Tedesco has embraced the role of a fan, enjoying both the State of Origin and club matches. He explained that in previous years he would concentrate more on his own performance. Now, he finds joy in watching the game evolve and learning from the experience.
Off the field, Tedesco’s personal life has flourished. Married to his wife Maria since January 2023, they welcomed their daughter Rosie and are expecting another child in August. Becoming a father has transformed his outlook, moving from a career-centric view to one that prioritises family. He expressed immense joy in returning home to see his daughter, who is beginning to recognise his involvement in football.
At 32, Tedesco feels that becoming a parent has made him more grounded and connected to life outside the sport, allowing him to grow alongside his family.
