Sandi Harvey’s car stands out on Sydney’s streets, not just for its silver hue but for its striking decoration featuring a large fire-breathing dragon on the back. Adorning the vehicle is a plea for information about her daughter, Leisl Smith, who has been missing since 2012. The car showcases the phrase “find Leisl Smith” alongside a missing person’s poster.
Tragically, Leisl’s ex-partner, James Scott Church, who was charged with her murder, took his own life in 2022 before a court verdict could be reached, leading to the dismissal of all legal proceedings against him. Sandi has been using her car as a mobile tribute since her daughter’s disappearance, driving it across New South Wales and Victoria in hopes of sparking someone’s memory or uncovering vital information.
In an interview with Ben Fordham Live on 2GB, Sandi expressed her desperation for answers, saying, “I hope that somebody sees it and goes, ‘Oh, I remember hearing something about that’.” Her campaign extends beyond the car, as she staples missing person posters to trees and distributes cards at bustling tourist destinations.
The heartache following Church’s death has proved challenging for Harvey. An inquest into Leisl’s disappearance continues, but due to the legal circumstances surrounding Church’s death, a criminal verdict will not emerge. Sandi articulated her pain, stating, “It was just devastating. Absolutely devastating… part of my heart is missing.”
Leisl, who was only 23 when she was last seen getting into a car at Tuggerah, was reportedly lured away by Church. Arrested in 2019, he denied the allegations of murdering her, asserting his innocence until his death. As Sandi continues her search, she emphasizes that the unknown is the hardest aspect to bear, reinforcing her commitment to finding closure. Anyone with information relating to Leisl’s case is urged to reach out to the authorities or Crime Stoppers.
