Brisbane Broncos’ director, Darren Lockyer, has indicated that the team is keen to assess how Selwyn Cobbo responds to his recent exclusion from the NRL team and a significantly reduced contract offer. The 23-year-old player, who has made a name for himself as a six-game State of Origin representative, finds his future with the Broncos uncertain after the club recently announced several player re-signings—none of which included Cobbo.

Broncos legend Gorden Tallis expressed concerns about the club’s decision to retain veteran halfback Adam Reynolds and several hookers while allowing Cobbo to drift towards rival teams. He described Cobbo’s contract offer of $300,000 per season—less than half of his current pay—as “disrespectful”, especially after Cobbo has been relegated to reserve grade.

Lockyer suggested that this situation is a learning opportunity for Cobbo, noting that confronting adversity can help players grow. He explained on Wide World of Sports that the move isn’t a signal that Cobbo’s time at the Broncos is over, but rather a challenge for him to prove his worth. Lockyer emphasised that consistent performance hinges on commitment in training and hard work, encouraging Cobbo to demonstrate resilience and determination during this testing phase.

Lockyer also compared Cobbo to league legend Greg Inglis, whose successful career was built on hard work and versatility. He highlighted Cobbo’s potential to reach similar heights, contingent on his willingness to work hard and maintain a strong mindset. Fellow Queensland great, Wally Lewis, has praised Cobbo’s talent but acknowledged his recent form slump, stating that he has been underperforming compared to his previous levels.

Rumours also suggest that Cobbo recently met with St George Illawarra, amidst speculation that the Dragons may allow Tyrell Sloan to leave, adding another layer of uncertainty to Cobbo’s future in the league. Overall, while Selwyn Cobbo faces challenges within the Broncos, both Lockyer and Lewis remain hopeful that with dedication, he can return to form and fulfil his potential.
