A recent government-funded analysis by the consumer group Choice has unveiled insights regarding grocery expenses across Australia’s major supermarket chains, namely Aldi, Woolworths, Coles, and IGA. The report, assessing prices for 14 commonly purchased winter products such as milk, WeetBix, bananas, chicken breast, onions, and oats, showed that Aldi offers the most competitive pricing.
Conducted in March 2025, the survey covered 104 stores spanning 27 locations, revealing that a typical shopping basket at Aldi costs approximately $55.35. This is closely followed by Woolworths at $58.92, making it just over $3 more expensive. Coles ranks slightly higher at $59.22, while IGA holds the title of the dearest option at $69.74, resulting in a significant $14.42 price gap compared to Aldi.
Further insights from Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, and Treasury Andrew Leigh, indicate that IGA consistently emerged as the priciest choice in every state and territory, whereas Aldi maintained its status as the cheapest across all regions where it operates.
Leigh noted, “We are working to address unfair pricing practices at major supermarkets to ensure Australian consumers and farmers receive the best possible deal at the checkout.” He stressed that the latest Choice report empowers consumers to make informed decisions and potentially save money.
Choice’s chief executive, Ashley de Silva, acknowledged that while prices can differ between supermarkets, Aldi frequently provides the best options overall, even when promotions are factored in. He highlighted some exceptions: without specials, Woolworths offers the most economical chicken breasts and pumpkins, while Coles has competitive apple pricing. Conversely, IGA was noted for better prices on carrots and garlic, though it was generally less favourable for other products.
The next quarterly supermarket report from Choice is anticipated in September, looking to continue providing valuable pricing comparisons to assist consumers in navigating their grocery shopping choices efficiently.
