South Australians are facing a significant storm surge that is battering the coastline and attracting many spectators. This marks the second surge in just 24 hours, with the latest being the most severe, leading to various damages and disruptions. Authorities from the State Emergency Service (SES) have issued continued warnings in response to the hazardous conditions.

The impressive yet dangerous waves along Adelaide’s beaches have drawn crowds of onlookers. However, safety is a concern, particularly in areas such as Port Noarlunga, where heavy rainfall has resulted in flooded roads. In preparation for potential damage, local businesses, including the Broadway Kiosk at Glenelg, have implemented sandbagging efforts.

The storm’s effects extend beyond the capital, causing rising sea levels in the south-east of the state. At Port MacDonnell, the jetty has been completely submerged due to the surging tides, while Kingston has witnessed torrential flooding, with seawater spilling into streets. The overflow from nearby creeks has exacerbated the flooding situation in Kingston, leading to further challenges for locals.

Kyle Hampel, a local worker, remarked on the chaos, calling it “pretty crazy.” Furthermore, strong winds accompanying the storm surge have downed trees across suburbs and the Adelaide Hills, with some gusts surpassing 90 kilometres per hour. Authorities predict that these adverse conditions may continue into the night.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant as the storm surge poses not only a spectacle but also serious safety risks.
