Naufahu Whyte has chosen not to explore the open market this season and has instead signed a three-year contract extension with the Sydney Roosters. The 23-year-old forward has stepped up as a key player in the Roosters’ pack, filling the void left by the retired Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, a three-time premiership winner.
Originally due to become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2026 season, Whyte was anticipated to attract interest from clubs including the Perth Bears. However, the Roosters acted swiftly to secure his future with the team, keeping the New Zealand international in their ranks.
This season, Whyte has made significant contributions on the field, averaging 151 running metres and 29 tackles per game across 12 matches, while also breaking 34 tackles. The young prop expressed his loyalty to the Roosters, stating, “There’s no other team I’d rather play for,” and reflecting on his journey since moving from Auckland as a teenager. He regards being a part of the Roosters as a blessing, stating it’s an honour to wear the club’s jersey and expressing his eagerness to grow his skills with coach Trent Robinson and his teammates.
Whyte already has three caps for the Kiwis and is rapidly approaching his 50th game in the NRL, showcasing why the Roosters were keen to extend his contract. Coach Trent Robinson praised Whyte for his strong work ethic both on and off the field, highlighting his competitive spirit and dedication to team improvement.
Robinson noted, “Fahu is a competitor with a deep hunger to improve. He’s worked incredibly hard to earn his place in our squad. He is a player you love coaching because he gives everything to the team and is genuinely a good person.” Whyte’s new contract ensures he remains with the Roosters until the end of 2029, coinciding with the arrival of new recruit Reece Robson, who will join the club next season.
