In an exclusive interview with 9News, Ahmad Sadeghi, Iran’s ambassador to Australia, has expressed strong opposition to Donald Trump’s decision to order bombings of Iranian nuclear facilities. Sadeghi labelled this act as an “act of animosity,” warning that it could lead to significant repercussions, including potential targeting of US military bases and the closure of critical maritime routes.

Sadeghi accused Trump of being a “puppet” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, asserting that such actions would provoke a response from Islamic nations worldwide. He remarked, “Islamic countries all around the world would consider this (an) act of animosity and they won’t be silent inside the region.” He also highlighted the presence of US personnel and bases in the Persian Gulf and suggested possible ramifications for oil navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route where one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.

The ambassador urged Australia, a nation he described as peace-loving, to refrain from aligning with the US in this context, advocating for justice instead. He emphasised that Iran has no animosity towards Australia and wants to clarify what he sees as misunderstandings regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, which he insists is peaceful and legal.

Regarding nuclear activities, Sadeghi denied allegations that Iran is enriching uranium close to weapons-grade levels and criticized the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, for failing in his role amid the tensions. He remarked that IAEA inspectors have had extensive access to Iranian facilities, and Iran has cooperated uniquely in terms of transparency.

Sadeghi also stated that Iran does not perceive US intentions as aiming for regime change and affirmed the unity of the Iranian people in safeguarding their nation and government. The ambassador’s comments come as tensions between Iran and the US escalate, and he has called for a dialogue based on mutual understanding and respect.
