Two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-17 Globemaster jets have arrived in the United Arab Emirates to assist in the repatriation of Australians caught in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The Australian government has initiated this response as approximately 1,200 Australians in Israel and about 1,500 in Iran have sought assistance.

A handful of Australians have successfully crossed into Jordan from Tel Aviv, but the situation remains fluid as Jordanian land border crossings can change status rapidly. Those seeking to leave have been urged to stay informed about the latest developments.

Currently, Israeli airspace is closed due to ongoing missile and drone attacks related to the conflict. Recent escalations have seen Israel striking numerous sites in Iran, including targeting nuclear facilities.

The Australian government has also evacuated its embassy in Tehran, but Australia’s Ambassador to Iran remains in the region to provide support during this crisis. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, has indicated that the government continues to plan for the safe departure of Australians in Iran while remaining in close coordination with allied nations. However, due to the unstable ground situation, consular services have become extremely limited.

For further developments, 9news.com.au has reached out to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for comments.
