Australians in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory experienced their coldest June morning in 25 years, with many waking up to frigid temperatures. Goulburn, in NSW, reported a chilling -10 degrees, making it colder than some areas of Antarctica, including the Davis research station, which recorded -8.4 degrees. This marks Goulburn’s coldest morning in eight years.

Other regions in NSW also faced bitterly cold conditions, with Cooma recording a minimum of -8.6 degrees shortly after dawn. The capital, Canberra, also felt the icy grip of winter, registering -7.6 degrees, marking its chilliest morning in eight years and the coldest June morning in 39 years.

Nearby Tuggeranong noted a temperature of -7.5 degrees, breaking records for the coldest morning since 2018 and also setting a 25-year low for this time of year. Additional towns like Forbes, Cowra, Temora, and Young experienced sub-zero temperatures, contributing to the chilly atmosphere across the region.

These unusually low temperatures can be attributed to a high-pressure system hovering over the south-east of Australia. While the region is currently enduring this cold snap, forecasts indicate a slight warming trend for minimum temperatures starting from Tuesday. Overall, this weekend proved to be one of the coldest on record for numerous locations in Australia, highlighting the severity of this winter chill.
