Conflict escalated between Israel and Iran recently, igniting concern over potential further military involvement from the United States. As President Trump deliberated on possible US airstrike participation, European officials engaged with Iranian representatives in Geneva, aiming to de-escalate rising tensions.
Despite intensive discussions lasting four hours, no agreements were reached. Trump announced he would postpone any decision regarding military involvement for up to two weeks, with the US likely to target Iran’s covert Fordo uranium enrichment site, which requires advanced munitions to reach.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to continue operations against what he termed an existential threat from Iran. This sentiment was echoed by Israel’s military leadership, signalling readiness for an extended campaign. As diplomatic talks closed, hopes remained for future dialogues, although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that negotiations with the US would not occur as long as Israel continued its assaults.
The backdrop of this conflict involves Iran’s past agreement to limit its uranium enrichment under the 2015 nuclear deal. However, following the US withdrawal from this agreement, Iran advanced its enrichment levels close to weapons-grade capabilities. Tensions reached a new peak when Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military installations, provoking retaliatory missile fire from Iran that caused casualties in Israeli cities.
The Israeli air operations have reportedly resulted in significant Iranian military damage, yet Iran’s missile threats remain prominent, with recent strikes causing injuries in Haifa. The total casualties since the onset of hostilities have exceeded 650 in Iran, with more than 24 killed in Israel.
At the international level, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed alarm over attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, particularly the potential dangers posed to the Bushehr nuclear power plant, warning that direct hits could release harmful radiation.
