Fremantle Dockers coach Justin Longmuir has addressed the recent uproar regarding the display of umpire photos in the team’s change rooms during their victory against North Melbourne. Longmuir expressed confusion over the public’s reaction, considering it an exaggerated response to what he described as a normal practice at the club.
During the game, images of all four field umpires were visible to broadcast cameras, sparking various interpretations from commentators. Fox Footy’s Jack Riewoldt found the photos amusing, referring to them as “mugshots”, while some suggested the move aimed to gain an advantage over the umpires. Longmuir, however, clarified that the photographs were meant to familiarise players and staff with the officials officiating the match, noting that the practice had been in place for several years.
He remarked, “It wasn’t a specific tactic; someone just decided to put them up somewhere different,” adding that it was surprising that such a routine element had attracted significant media attention. Longmuir insisted that there was nothing sinister involved: “We want our players and staff to understand who is umpiring the game. It’s not to get a benefit the wrong way or right way.”
Following the recent disturbance, the photos were reportedly not on display during the match against Essendon, likely as a precaution. However, they had been seen during earlier Fremantle games at Optus Stadium this season.
In their most recent outing, the Dockers achieved an impressive 41-point win over Essendon. Star ruckman Luke Jackson excelled with 48 hit-outs, contributing three goals, while midfielder Caleb Serong showcased his talent with 35 disposals and two goals.
