A 46-year-old man has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault following the tragic death of Constable Keith Anthony Smith, a 57-year-old officer with a 25-year tenure in the Tasmanian Police. Constable Smith was fatally shot while attending a property on Allison Road in North Motton to serve a court-issued warrant for repossession around 11am on Monday.

The accused appeared in a bedside court session and is currently receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries while under police supervision. He is expected to face court at a later date.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams expressed gratitude towards the officers involved in the incident for their “dedication and professionalism.” She acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding the investigation and commended the officers for their diligent work. Adams emphasised the strong support provided by members of the Tasmanian Police to Constable Smith’s family and fellow officers, highlighting the cohesion of the “blue family.”

Earlier in the week, Adams referred to Smith as having had a “distinguished career,” earning the respect of his peers. Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff stated that the community was deeply affected by this tragedy, sharing in the grief of Constable Smith’s loved ones. He noted that Smith, a proud and brave Tasmanian, began his day like many others, only to face an unimaginable outcome.

The incident has sparked widespread reflection on the risks faced by law enforcement personnel and the impact of such tragedies on the community.
