Hideo Kojima, the iconic video game designer and president of Kojima Productions, recently visited Australia as part of his world tour for the upcoming game Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. Kojima, known for revolutionising the gaming industry with titles like Metal Gear, shared insights into his creative process and his passion for storytelling.

Initially wanting to be a film director, Kojima’s transition into game development allowed him to craft highly cinematic experiences. At 61, this passion for film is evident in his work. Kojima’s tour began with a media interview at the PlayStation office in Sydney, followed by a sold-out event at Sydney Town Hall with renowned Australian director George Miller, who is celebrated for works like Mad Max.

A significant aspect of Death Stranding 2 is its setting in Australia, which Kojima considers a perfect backdrop due to its unique landscapes and wildlife. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic that hindered his ability to scout locations in person, Kojima still managed to capture Australia’s essence through local expertise. His affection for Australian wildlife is reflected in the game, which features local animals, contrasting the first instalment’s limited wildlife.

During his time in Australia, Kojima visited the zoo, where he learned more about native species. His creative imagination knows no bounds—he views it as an essential part of his identity and a constant source of inspiration. He likened this imaginative drive to a "disease" that fuels his game development process, enabling him to transform everyday scenarios into rich narratives.

Kojima’s admiration for George Miller culminated in Miller’s appearance in Death Stranding 2, showcasing a unique collaboration between film and video games. The event featured clips of Miller’s character in the game, generating excitement among fans. Additionally, the Philippou twins, known for their film Talk to Me, will also appear in the game, marking another Australian connection.

The tour is set to continue to major cities like Tokyo, Paris, and London, with plans for an orchestral performance of Death Stranding returning to Sydney later this year. Enthusiasts can anticipate Death Stranding 2 debuting on PlayStation 5 on June 26, promising an immersive experience that reflects Kojima’s ongoing exploration of creativity and narrative depth.

Kojima’s visit highlighted his passion for storytelling and the limitless potential of video games as a medium, solidifying his legacy as a visionary in the industry. Fans eagerly await the next chapter in his ongoing journey.
