Erin Patterson, the accused in a high-profile triple murder trial, stood firm during extensive cross-examination, according to her barrister Colin Mandy SC. In the Victorian Supreme Court, he emphasised her choice to provide evidence and face rigorous questioning rather than exercising her right to remain silent. Mandy noted that Patterson’s narrative concerning a fatal beef Wellington lunch did not falter despite over 20 hours of intense interrogation by Crown Prosecutor Nanette Rogers SC.

Patterson, 50, has been charged with the murder of her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister, Heather, along with an attempted murder count involving Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, who survived the incident. The tragic events unfolded after a lunch hosted by Patterson on 29 July 2023, where the three deceased consumed the meal prepared by her.

Mandy pointed out that Patterson’s testimony was not only scrutinised by those present at the trial but also by a wider audience. He reinforced that her account remained consistent, despite interacting with more than 21 individuals shortly after the lunch, including health professionals and law enforcement. According to him, although the inquiries varied based on who posed them, her answers remained fundamentally unchanged.

In her admissions, Patterson acknowledged misleading her guests regarding a cancer diagnosis and hinted at the potential inclusion of foraged mushrooms in the dish. Mandy’s closing statements are expected to continue before Justice Christopher Beale provides the jury with final directions. The judge has indicated that deliberations will not commence until next week, with the jury potentially beginning their discussions on Tuesday afternoon.
