Constable Keith Anthony Smith, aged 57, tragically lost his life when he was shot while attending a rural property in North Motton to execute a court-ordered warrant for home repossession. This incident occurred yesterday, and Smith was accompanied by another officer at the time of the shooting.

Commissioner Donna Adams has acknowledged Smith’s distinguished career with Tasmania Police, noting that he was highly esteemed by his peers. “Keith was a respected and committed officer,” Adams stated, emphasising the profound impact of his loss on the police community and the broader public. She extended her heartfelt condolences to Smith’s wife and family, pledging support during this challenging period.

The police community, often referred to as the “Blue Family”, will unite in solidarity over the coming days and weeks to provide mutual support in light of this unfortunate incident.

Smith had a commendable career, having joined the Tasmanian police force in September 2000, graduating from the police academy in May 2001. His dedication was recognised when he received the Commissioner’s Medal in 2011 and the National Police Service Medal in 2016. In 2021, he was awarded a clasp for 20 years of service.

While no other officers were injured during this tragic event, Commissioner Adams acknowledged the emotional toll it would take on all staff involved. An investigation is ongoing, and a 46-year-old man from North Motton is currently hospitalised under police guard following surgery for non-life-threatening injuries. As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
