Carlton Football Club is increasingly hopeful that star ruckman Tom De Koning will choose to remain with the team. This optimism follows a recent private meeting between De Koning and the club’s incoming chief executive, Graham Wright. Previously, many at the club believed the 25-year-old was set to leave as a free agent, especially after St Kilda made a significant seven-year offer worth $1.7 million.
However, the tone seemed to shift after De Koning reached out for a meeting with Wright before travelling to Perth. In their discussion, De Koning sought clarity on what changes the club would implement to encourage him to stay. Responses from senior Carlton players and officials after the meeting suggest a growing belief that he might reconsider his departure plans.
Former Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd commented on this development, noting that the potential for De Koning to stay is encouraging news for Carlton. He emphasised the importance of De Koning to the team, stating he might now be crucial given some other players appear to be stagnating in their performance. Just a few weeks ago, Lloyd wouldn’t have ranked De Koning as Carlton’s most vital player, but the recent form has convinced him of De Koning’s significance, especially as he is currently among the club’s best performers, leading in disposals and hit-outs per game.
This newfound interest from De Koning to engage in discussions with the club signifies his willingness to explore options rather than committing to leaving for a rival. Should the club address his concerns effectively, Carlton could very well retain one of its standout players.
